Tangier Climate Report
The Rif, due to its geographical location and natural predispositions (hilly landscapes, predominantly flysch lithology, contrasting climate with alternating periods of rain and intense drought), is among the Mediterranean mountains one of the most vulnerable to natural disasters. The combination of these factors is the cause of natural hazards such as floods, inundations and landslides; usually described as exceptional, these phenomena have become, since the last twenty years, a topical fact, and a recurring source of concern for the authorities faced with a high number of adverse events.
In the current context of climate change, Mediterranean regions face longer dry periods in late summer and more torrential rains in winter. Mountainous regions, in particular, are experiencing an exacerbation of geomorphological processes (gullies, landslides, etc.) that are detrimental to human settlements. Northern Morocco, and in particular the Rif mountains, are not spared, as they naturally correspond to a very geodynamically active zone.
